Niels Peter Dorch
(1814-1882)
Under direction of his son Jens Dorch (1760-1812), captain of Odense's civil guard, and his son's son, royal hatter Henrich Jensen Dorch (1783-1867) and his son's son, manufacturer Niels Peter Dorch (1814-1882) the firm eventually became a large and reputable company which, besides manufacturing hats, also included coloring and a garment factory led by Niels Peter's brother, Claus Dorch (1823-1876).
The company was represented in 1872 at the Nordic Industrial and Art Exhibition in Copenhagen. Unfortunately, the garment factory burned the night between 2 and 3 July 1875. However, it was quickly re-established; but was sold already a few years later.
The sale of the refurbished factory in November 1879 also became the end of the family's era in Frue Kirkestræde in Odense, and the family began spreading across the world.
Royal hatter Rasmus Dorch's (1819-1872) son, hatter Henrik Jensen Dorch, emigrated to America shortly after his father's death. A few years later, two of Niels Peter's sons, Jens Henrik Dorch and Oluf Christian Dorch did the same thing. Claus' sons Johan Henrik Sophus Dorch and Johan Frederik Dorch settled in Sweden and Elias Anton Dorch in Estonia.
A branch of the firm "Dorch & Co., Hattefabrik", originally led by Rasmus, was still located in Odense at Vestergade 4 until 1896, after which it was found in Nørregade 37 in 1897. The Odense branch was eventually run by two of Niels Peter's unmarried daughters, sisters Anne Kirstine Henriette Dorch (1852-1936) and Christine Marie Dorch (1858-1942).
Another of Niels Peter's sons Henrik Jensen Dorch (1856-1909) moved the compary to Immervad in Aarhus in 1881 and later, in 1889, to Købmagergade 1 in Copenhagen.
In 1913, the company moved to Østergade 61 at "Strøget" in Copenhagen, where his son, Svend Julius Fabricius Dorch (1888-1952), ran the company to his death. The store in Østergade was sold in 1953. Then the company had existed for 200 years.
